These rice husks are considered nothing more than waste by local Tanzanian farmers who often leave them out in large piles, burn them outdoors, or dump them out in forests. This has caused them to be a source of climate-changing carbon emissions.
Kidolezi stated that TBL has bought these husks from local farmers and then recycled them so that more than 60% of electricity in Mwanza’s factory now runs off them. This has allowed the brewery to halve carbon emissions and simultaneously save $400,000 a year on oil purchases. TBL now plans to spread this techniques to other plants around Tanzania.
